Sermon for Sunday, 02/24/2019 Text: Luke 15:11-32 Theme: “God Restores our Broken Relationship” What keeps you awake at night? For many, the answer is worry. Worry about our personal finances, worry about our kids, a friend, our job, what needs to be done tomorrow, the future, and the list seems endless. But for the father in this story, like so many of us, it is worry about a broken relationship. The story of the Prodigal(wasteful) Son is a very familiar one that Jesus tells in the gospel about a man who had two sons. The younger son demands that the father should give his share of his dad’s estate. So, the father divides his estate among his two sons. This was not unusual, because according to Jewish law, the older son was entitled to two-thirds, while the younger son, one-third of their father’s property (Deut. 21:17), but not until the father was retiring from managing the estate or when he was dying. This is where the story takes an unusual twist and reveals the heartless callousness of the younger son. He was in effect telling his dad, give me my portion of the estate now; for you are going die anyway, and I just cannot wait until then. He was saying, “I wish you were dead, so let me have my share now.” Many people misquote the Bible that, “money is the root of all evil.” It’s not money, but “the love of money is the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10). We have seen so many wonderful families ripped apart because someone wants a lion share of the estate. Or a member of the family kills another because she or he wants the life insurance benefit and wants it now. We see these ancient stories of the Bible play out before us every day. The son packed his bags, and like Eddie Murphy’s popular movie, “Coming to America,” he leaves home and ventures into the world. In his case, a world away from God. This story is a portrayal of our relationship with God. Many times, it’s easy to feel that the world has something better in store for us than God has. Like this younger son, we arche to get away. We move away from the church, away from God because God seems too slow, too boring, and even too loving for us to comprehend. We break our relationship with him. We want something that gives us meaning and purpose apart from God. I always told my kids that in life, “not everything that glitters is gold.” Sometimes we go after things that seem attractive, pleasing, and captivating. We go and go and go, and God watches us go until we hit rock bottom. This is exactly what is happening to this young man. Thomas Huxley says, “A man worst difficulties begin when he is able to do just what he likes.” How true it is for this fellow, as well as for some of us at times! The text says he went into a faraway country and there “he squandered his property and spent all his money on lose living.” I don’t know about you, church, but I just cannot see a purposeful life without God. For me, life has no meaning and purpose without God. This is the point this text is making right here. See where this lovely son ends up! Warren Wiersbe writes, “we are always heading for trouble whenever we value things more than people(relationship), pleasure more than duty and distant scenes more than the blessings we have right at home.” Especially at home with God. Without any money and now in a state of desperation, he has no choice, because he has no food to eat. Now he must do the unimaginable. He seeks and obtains a contract from a citizen of that foreign country to feed his hogs. To add insult to injury, he even considers eating the pigs’ slop. This is the lowest that a Jew can sink. For the Jewish law says, “Cursed is the man who feeds swine.” In the words of Jennifer Cowarts, “sometimes it takes a low point to come to ourselves.” Given our freedom of choice, God does not force us to be in his fold, although nothing compares to being there. When we rebel and walk away, he leaves us alone until we sometimes reach a low point and learn the hard way. The text says, “when he came to his sense,” he said to himself, how many of my father’s hired servants have more than enough bread to eat and here I am perishing.” I like this point. Her is this young man who has completely severed his relationship with his father realizing that his dad has more in store than he needs. When will we realize that we have severed our relationship with God, or that friend or that family member?” Will we ever come to yourself? Again, Jennifer Cowarts writes, “Coming to our senses and choosing to love others deeply are the first steps in restoring a broken relationship. This is very necessary. Not only did this young man realize, but he took the necessary step. He said, “I will rise and go.” In our broken relationship with God and others, we must act. “Taking responsibility for our mistakes brings healing into a messy relationship, “Jennifer writes. But the good news is, long before this guy could come to his senses and begin his rehearsal, “I will rise and go to my father and say, dad, I have sinned against heaven and you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son,” the father was always on the lookout to restore this broken relationship. He was kept awake God is always on the outlook for us. For we were created for relationship with God and with one another. Not just a weekly or monthly relationship, but God desires a healthy daily relationship with us. We see this in the father’s actions of compassion, forgiveness, and love that led to the restoration of relationship. While his son was still a long way off, the father ran to him and embraced and kissed him. He ordered his servants to kill the fattest cow, bring his best robe, put his ring on his finger and put his shoes on his feet. For this guy was lost but now is found; he was dead but now he is alive. Each of us at one time or another find ourselves in the shoes of this younger son. We want to go away from home with God. Sometimes we rebel and leave for months or years, severing our relationship with our creator. But God desires a healthy daily relationship with you. Each day God is looking out to welcome us back and restore our affected and sometimes broken relationship with him. Would you take the first step and come back home? For God desires each of us to be at home with him, not just for some days, but each and every day. God bless you
